Let’s hike Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route for two days and reach Mandara Hut and Maundi Crater at 2760 m with its wonderful views of the towering “Roof of Africa”.

Within this trip we will not reach the summit, so this is an ideal solution for those who dream of experiencing this majestic mountain without spending a week and without pressure to go to the peak. Nevertheless, we’ll spend overnight in Mandara Hut – a first camp for the summit climbers, and we’ll walk to Maudi Crater, full of a spirit of adventure. Two days on Kilimanjaro on this wonderful Mandara Hut hike is absolutely an upscale experience.

Tour Plan

Day 1: Moshi – Marangu Gate (1850 m) – Mandara Hut (2700 m) – Maundi Crater (2760 m)

Walking time: 4-5 hrs
Altitude gain: 850 m

Our driver will pick you up from your hotel in Moshi (or from Kilimanjaro Airport upon prior arrangement, if you arrive early enough to start the trip today). You will be taken to Marangu Gate at an altitude of 1850m, where our mountain guide will quickly deal with formalities.

Our hike begins through the dense rainforest, distinctive for this altitude. The flora of this humid Marangu rainforest features towering eucalyptus trees, giant ferns, junipers, sycamore trees, thick moss, and lichens. There are a multitude of birds here. Look up into the trees, and you might see (and definitely hear) primates such as blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and olive baboons.

A side trip to Maundi Crater will give us a chance to admire the views of Northern Tanzania and Kenya, and its volcanic soil with an almost complete absence of vegetation will remind us of the long-gone Kilimanjaro’s volcanic activity.

On average, 4 to 5 hours and 7 km of trek will bring us to Mandara Hut for hot dinner and overnight.

After a hearty breakfast this morning, enjoy some more time for adventurous walks near Mandara Hut, taking in magnificent views of Mawenzi Peak and the summit of Kibo.

After a hot steaming lunch and sharing Kilimanjaro stories with your experienced and friendly mountain guide at Mandara Hut, you will proceed downhill to Marangu Gate. From here, the transfer to Moshi town will be provided. In total, we will have hiked for about 8 km today.

Upon prior arrangement, our driver will happily take you to Kilimanjaro Airport for your evening flight to Zanzibar; or to Arusha, from where you can continue exploring Tanzania wonders on our far-reaching safari adventure.
